Bissell 9400 Carpet Cleaner Review
Assembly
Like many of the other home carpet cleaners, the ProHeat 9400 is very easy to assemble together and get up
and running. The only tool you need is a Phillips screwdriver. The assembly process consists of sliding together
the upper and lower handles and attaching them together with 3 screws. (Full instructions with photos and all
screws included)
The hose and tool racks snap into place, and then you simply put the tools into place on the tool
caddy and wrap the hose and cord around the rack. That's it. Pretty quick and easy.
12-Amp Motor
The Bissell 9400 utilizes a powerful 12-Amp motor that gives it the power to deep clean your
carpets and suction up the excess water. To turn on the machine you'll switch on the power switch that is located
on the front of the machine. (This is also where the built-in heater switch is located as well.) Step on the handle
release foot lever and you're off and cleaning.
2-In-1 Water Tank
This particular Bissell model uses a 2-in-1 water tank that stores the hot water for cleaning in a
unique rubber bladder. The dirty water is held inside the tank surrounding the bladder. The bladder itself is very
thick and durable, so there's no problem with it coming apart.
The one thing I do want to mention is that you should only pour in hot tap water from your faucet.
Never boil or microwave water and attempt to pour it inside the bladder. It will melt the rubber and cause it to be
destroyed.
Cleaning Solution Tank System
Bissell adds a separate, smaller cleaning solution tank that works quite well. With many machines
you mix the solution with the clean water and have it all in one tank. That's fine of course, but then you have to
completely use up the tank or you're just wasting the cleaning solution.
Having a separate tank makes it a little more convenient and handy. When you are finished cleaning
and have some leftover carpet shampoo in your tank, you can leave it in there until the next time you need to use
it.
Emptying and refilling the tank is pretty straightforward. You'll only need to press the foot lever
to lower the handle, lift out the water tank, flip over the lever handle on the tank and empty it out. You can then
refill it with water and put it back in place.
Dual DirtLifter Power Brushes
Bissell uses two rows of power brushes on a roller to deep clean your carpets and get up the dirt.
They incorporate a unique floating suspension system that adjusts to the various carpet heights automatically. We
like the fact that the brushes will not spin whenever the machine is in its upright position. So you won't need to
be concerned about them wearing out the fibers of your carpet if the unit is simply sitting in place while
running.
Built-In Hot Water Heater
One of the biggest features of the Bissell 9400 carpet cleaner is the built-in heater. This is not
a feature you generally find in carpet cleaning machines costing less than $250. The heater automatically heats up
the tap water an additional 25°. The maxium setting that the heater will maintain its water temperature is 190°.
This is a nice feature since cleaning with hot water helps in getting up the ground in dirt and stains.
There is also a separate power switch for turning on and off the heater. There may be times when
you do not need hot water, such as using it on more delicate carpeting or rugs.

8 Foot Hose & 30 Foot Power Cord
A long 30 foot power cord helps you clean larger areas in your home without having to constantly
move the cord to a different plug-in all the time.
The 8 foot hose for use with the added cleaning attachments is the ideal size for ease in
maneuvering over furniture and stairs without getting in the way or being too short.
Edge-To-Edge Cleaning and Suction Power
Getting up against the baseboard trim or walls can often be an issue with some machines, but the
Bissell 9400 has a unique edge to edge system that allows it to be flush with the walls or trim to help get
everything cleaned. The rubber padding assures you that it will not scratch or damage the wood, and its 'surround
suction' gets all of the excess water picked up, leaving you with faster drying carpets. The floor nozzle provides
a 12 inch cleaning path as well.
Custom Clean Feature
Another nice aspect of this carpet cleaning machine is the custom clean feature. It allows you to
choose the setting you desire for any particular cleaning situation. For example, you can set it to 'high traffic'
for more dirty areas, or 'normal clean', 'light clean', or the available 'rinse' setting.
Once you set the machine to any one setting, the machine automatically adjusts the amount of
cleaning solution and water to that particular setting.
Tools and Attachments Included
Bissell is not stingy in providing an array of upholstery and stairway cleaning tools with this
cleaner. You'll find a 6" turbo brush stair tool, 3 inch crevice tool and a 4 inch upholstery tool and a tough
stain tool in addition to the floor nozzle. This makes quick work in cleaning furniture upholstery, stairs and even
your own vehicle interiors and floor mats if you like.
Includes Carpet Cleaning Solutions
Bissell also adds in some trial sized containers of their carpet cleaning solution, tough stain
cleaner and a container of Scotchgard to help protect your freshly cleaned furniture from future spills and
stains.
1-Year Warranty
The company stands behind the ProHeat 9400 with a 1-year warranty.
Summary of Reviews
The Bissell ProHeat 9400 carpet cleaner has several features such as the built-in heater, added
cleaning tools and an edge to edge cleaning path that we like a lot in this home machine.
As far as performance, it does an above average job; certainly much better than its earlier
predecessor, the 9200 in our opinion. Reviews from other users on Amazon have been much better than average with
many commenting on how well it operates and cleans their carpets.

"I bought my ProHeat a few years ago and it is by far one of the best home purchases I have made. I use
it all the time and it really does keep the carpets looking clean and new. We have pets and a toddler
and there hasn't been a single stain it could not get out..." K.Sanford |
